This week Historic Shipwreck Salvors, Blue Water Ventures Key West, Inc. once again uncovered several interesting, historic artifacts including a large portion of a gold bar with markings, 2 gold bar bits, one with XXI (or 21 Karats) marked on it and several pieces of pottery.
Blue Water Ventures, joint venture partners of Mel Fisher’s Treasures working on the Margarita shipwreck site, is closely following a trail of artifacts created nearly 400 years ago when Santa Margarita sank in a hurricane approximately 35 miles West of Key West, FL.
The Blue Water Rose and its crew: Captain Greg Bounds, First Mate Tony Gill and divers, Chris Rackley, Mike Dodd and Dan Porter are carefully logging pertinent archeological data with each artifact found in an attempt to uncover the path leading to Santa Margarita’s yet to be discovered main cultural deposit.

Owner W. Keith Webb said he was very excited about these new finds and credits the captain and crew of the Blue Water Rose for doing a professional and thorough job of collecting data from each artifact as it comes off the ocean floor and combining it with the archaeological guidance provided by R. Duncan Mathewson III, Ph.D., Archaeological Director and partner.
“These new finds could very well lead to the next large cultural deposit of Santa Margarita artifacts and a chance to see how people lived over 400 years ago. From a historical standpoint, its very exhilarating.” said Webb.
